Tip of the Week
Benefit for Cullen Carter

Kate Zambreno

The Underground Literary Alliance recently made it to gossip central--Page Six in the New York Post--with news that the writers-advocacy group was featured in a recent issue of Dave Egger's literary journal "The Believer," despite heated protests by the staggering genius, who gave in to his fellow editors' pleas. He's probably not a fan of these muckrackers of the literary world made up of a crew of zine writers most known for criticizing Guggenheim and NEA grants for wealthy writers like Jonathan Franzen and Rick Moody. Now the writers advocacy group is agitating for a different cause. Milwaukee writer Cullen Carter has been in a coma since an accident in April, and so the ULA is throwing a benefit show to help with the hospital bills for their fellow zinester. The lineup for the Summer Extravaganza includes Chicago's own Todd Dills of The 2nd Hand, The Whirligig's Frank Marcopolos, Ann Sterzinger, as well as readings from Carter's work.

The Summer Extravaganza Benefit for Cullen Carter takes place on Aug 3 at 8pm. The Barrel Café, 820 West Jackson, (312) 559-0400. $10.

It's difficult to imagine Smith writing anything but a huge work--so many ideas, characters and wonderful sentences are generously packed into her follow-up that any one page can start to read like Dave Eggers' footnotes and leave you feeling just as heady.
