Entrance

Dave Chamberlain

The project of former A Convocation Of member Guy Blakeslee, Entrance takes a guitar from the left side and proceeds to pound, strum and pluck out whatever he damn well pleases, depending on mood. Judging from Entrance's debut record, "The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken By Storm," his inspirational fountain spews everything from blues-master Robert Johnson to Robert Plant, but regardless of the source, Blakeslee makes it his own and absolutely smothers it in musical fury. Sometimes he strums the hell out of the guitar ("I'm So Glad"), at other times he plays it like a cowboy troubadour from the nineteenth century, and then there's that hard-blues pluck. But whatever he's doing, it's as alluring as you could hope for any record to be, and word has it that this guy can win over a room before he even finishes his first song. Don't, however, for the love of God, call it folk music--that might get you busted in the lip.

Entrance plays July 7 at Schubas, 3159 North Southport, (773)525-2508.

Persistence has paid off for Kevin McDonough. The singer/songwriter/guitarist for local power-trio The Drapes has been slugging away now for more than eight years, trying to not only take care of all of the above, but to also keep the band together.
