For some reason, Joseph Epstein's "Fabulous Small Jews" reminds me of
Dorothy Parker's short stories. Both the Algonquin Roundtable mistress
of the bon mot and the author of "Snobbery: The American Version" and
new go-to guy for all thing's elitist have a way of turning up their
nose in their nonfiction that's altogether incisive and charming. But
their fiction reveals an empathetic eye for the little people. The
stories in the Northwestern professor's newest collection are still
full of the social commentary, wry wit, and dry deadpan he's becoming
known for, yet with more sympathy for his characters, a dying breed of
old-school Jewish men living in Chicago struggling with their daily
existence. Joseph Epstein discusses "Fabulous Small Jews" on June 8 at 7pm.
Barnes & Noble, 1701 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, (847)328-0883.
