Back in the nineties, hardcore went from barking against the status quo
to amplified self-analysis. Bands began expressing themselves musically
by taking the volatile nature of punk and combined that energy with
pendulum dynamics and lyrics that broached subjects other than politics
and social injustice. Some bands burrowed inward to the point of
self-loathing, while others preached empowerment. The term "emo"
emerged, as did a whole generation of bands. Part of Washington D.C.'s
DeSoto bunch, Dismemberment Plan possessed just as much romantic angst
and boy-meets-girl frustration as the next "emo" outfit, but the Plan
didn't wears its heart on its sleeves with the same self-pity shown by
much of its brethren. The band unleashed its anxiety with the manic fury
of a dyed-in-the-wool metal band while still capturing somber tones and
it even toyed with elements of R&B and hip-hop with productive results.
Now bearing down on ten years in the trenches, Dismemberment Plan says
goodbye with what is billed as "The Farewell Concert." The Dismemberment Plan plays June 19 at the Metro, 3730 North Clark,
(773)549-0203.
