*Black Narcissus

(1947, England) Directed by Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. Superb, ravishing use of production design, stylized Technicolor and music highlight story of repression and sexual delirium among the denizens of a remote Himalayan nunnery. An astonishing, lucidly erotic masterpiece, made entirely in the studio. Powell said, "'Black Narcissus' I would describe as a well made film... These films are nearly always pastiche or hodgepodge--you know, real Southern India in the studio--so I said, 'This won't do, such a delicate story, we've got to create a whole atmosphere here.' Faces fell around--they wanted to go to India, but afterwards, they enjoyed themselves tremendously." (The title refers to a particular woman's scent; there's no such flower.) Oscar for cinematography. With Deborah Kerr, Sabu, Flora Robson, Jean Simmons. 99m. 35 mm. $8. Siskel Film Center (312)846-2600, 164 N. State at Randolph, 6.
