Tip of the Week
Nina Revoyr

Kate Zambreno

"Now, the children feel trapped in that part of the city, and because they've learned, from watching their parents' lives, the limits of their futures, they smash whatever they can, which is usually each other." The almost mythical Los Angeles, in which Nina Revoyr sets the "Southland" of her novel, has navigated the hard labyrinth of history in which races and generations intersect in the still-changing Southern Californian neighborhoods. Her character's presents have been silenced and held back by history, although they shake with past tremors: the Japanese-American law student whose family sat mute through the internment camps, the black social worker whose cousin was mysteriously killed in the riots. With a voice that is honest and clear, and an exacting sense of imagery, Revoyr firmly and gently traces a history of strength and survival, and ultimately, of freedom.

Nina Revoyr reads from "Southland" on April 19 at 7:30pm. Quimby's Books, 1854 West North Avenue, (773)342-0910.

In "The Blue Moon Circus," local author Michael Raleigh travels back through the tumbleweeds of the pioneering Old West, to just past the heyday of the railroad circus, when Barnum & Bailey and the Ringling Brothers were living gods to those who aspired to be more than dog-and-pony shows.

"Jesus, I spent twenty-one years becoming an urban homosexual. Really, it's a full-time job," jokes one, when introducing himself to the Human Sexuality class.

Button it up
Here in the city, the navy blue "No War" button with the white star is fighting with patriotic flair in an accessory street theater of sorts.
