Tip of the Week
Michael Raleigh

Kate Zambreno

In "The Blue Moon Circus," local author Michael Raleigh travels back through the tumbleweeds of the pioneering Old West, to just past the heyday of the railroad circus, when Barnum & Bailey and the Ringling Brothers were living gods to those who aspired to be more than dog-and-pony shows. In 1920s small-town Oklahoma, Lewis Tully, a rough and tough Don Quixote with the circus in his blood, hitches up his wagon and sets off on the "fool's errand" to patch together his Big Top one last time, along with a ragtag cast of circus characters. A charming piece of historical fiction that resurrects the "lost art" of the circus, pre-$50 admission prices and manufactured magic.

Michael Raleigh reads from "The Blue Moon Circus" on April 8 at 7:30pm at Barbara's Bookstore, 1350 North Wells Street, (312) 642-5044.

Sew fine

Although she has been designing what she terms sculptural garments out of everyday objects like baby-bottle nipples, buttons and bobbins since 1997, the resulting work, "Not for Sale," made the artist and her witty, provocative dresses all the fashion.
