In "The Blue Moon Circus," local author Michael Raleigh travels back
through the tumbleweeds of the pioneering Old West, to just past the
heyday of the railroad circus, when Barnum & Bailey and the Ringling
Brothers were living gods to those who aspired to be more than
dog-and-pony shows. In 1920s small-town Oklahoma, Lewis Tully, a rough
and tough Don Quixote with the circus in his blood, hitches up his wagon
and sets off on the "fool's errand" to patch together his Big Top one
last time, along with a ragtag cast of circus characters. A charming
piece of historical fiction that resurrects the "lost art" of the
circus, pre-$50 admission prices and manufactured magic. Michael Raleigh reads from "The Blue Moon Circus" on April 8 at
7:30pm at Barbara's Bookstore, 1350 North Wells Street, (312) 642-5044.
