I have yet to see this Japanese band live for the simple reason that I
have never been to the land of the rising sun. Rumors of the group
touring the U.S. last October turned into whispers, which turned into
silence. Now they land on these shores performing pop that's sugary,
sweet, and slightly psychedelic in a "Sunshine Superman" sort of way.
That's right, Donovan is in the mix, along with the Beach Boys,
Beatles, Turtles and all the usual suspects who light up the faces of
Elephant Six bands and fans. The band's 2002 U.S. debut, "California,"
included songs from the original 2000 overseas album as well as a few
added tracks including a cover of an Of Montreal tune. At least I think
it's Of Montreal--sometimes, due to accents or studio gimmickry, it's
hard to tell exactly what Elekibass is singing about, even though it's
hummable as hell. Elekibass plays March 3 at Schubas, 3159 North Southport,
(773)525-2508.
