Don't let the moniker throw you for a loop; The Scotland Yard Gospel
Choir are not from the U.K., nor do they perform gospel music, nor are
they a choir. SYGC are a Chicago-based group that creates a lush
daydream accented by folk-based guitars, heart-tugging cello, light,
swirling Fender Rhodes piano and sensitive, captivating vocals. The
debut single ("Jennie That Cries" w/"Not Helicopters") from these
Columbia College students shows they are kindred spirits to Belle and
Sebastian. SYGC is currently at work on its first full-length album,
tentatively titled "I Bet You Say That To All The Boys." To compound
the confusion, Forty Piece Choir are also on the bill and is neither a
choir nor have as many members as their name might signify. However, its
jam-based psychedelic journeys into the center of the mind can spark
hallucinogenic effects that might have you believing otherwise. Yum Yum
and My Secret Service complete the bill.
The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir plays January 11 at the Empty Bottle,
1035 North Western, (773)276-3600.
