Wheat

Tony Barnett

Since the latter part of the nineties, Wheat has made an art out of being three subdued and unassuming individuals. To use an old rock 'n' roll cliché, they let the music do the talking. What they utter musically crosses boundaries between rural rock, Brit-pop, shoegazing fuzz, lo-fi, with a tad of textured mystery and ambient quirkiness. Fans of Centro-matic and Swearing At Motorists take note. It's little wonder Wheat landed an opening slot for the Flaming Lips on New Year's Eve. But since that show is sold out, your opportunity to catch this eclectic and talented trio is at Schubas.

Wheat plays Schubas, 3159 N. Southport, (773)525-2508, on December 29.

It took me awhile to get past the cover, which features Heyman sitting crossed-legged on the floor, holding a guitar, with a prize mullet. But once I overcame the haircut, I discovered an album packed full of endearing power-pop
