![]() Tip of the Week Jamie Lyn Mitchell
You've been where Jamie Lyn Mitchell stands with her camera, when you
were a kid on a boring day, staring at things abstractedly and watching
them stare back at you. Mitchell's color shots of nondescript interiors
and empty suburban streets are too formally composed and too bleached
and faded--although they are often garishly lit--to be random fixations;
they are documents of an alienated sensibility. That's the first take,
but linger with these images a little longer and you will begin to get
lost in their surprising range of subtle, shifting colors. The child has
suddenly become an aesthete, relishing in an ordinary lamp, with a
tilted white accordion shade and a glowing amber base, sitting on a
simple wooden table, shot against a dusty mauve wall dappled with
patches of light and modestly exhibiting a wondrous range of hues. Jamie Lyn Mitchell's photographs are showing at Standard Gallery,
1437 North Bosworth, (773)486-1005, through December 14.
