Tip of the Week
Dana Frank

Michael Weinstein

Santana? Steven Tyler? Moby? You'll find them all and many more in living color in Dana Frank's shots of all manner of rock stars. A promiscuous photographic groupie oblivious to genre and era, Frank demands exaggerated expression from her subjects, whether they're in the heat of performance or posing for her commanding eye. Matchbox 20 didn't know what they were in for when Frank invaded their lair; much as they tried to be blasé and hip, she extracted an intensity from them that blew their cool. She's not satisfied unless the rockers are burning physical or emotional tissue to live up to their professed images. Poor wide-eyed Moby holding his bongos, wearing white socks revealed between his black pants and shoes, and surrounded by his electronic apparatus is at last the repressed nerd that he aspires to be.

Dana Frank's "Captured Idols: The VH1 Exhibit," is showing at David David Leonardis Gallery,1346 North Paulina, (773)278-3058, through December 10.
