![]() Tip of the Week Joel Sternfeld
In one of the most unabashedly beautiful series of contemporary
photographs, Joel Sternfeld takes us to New York City's Highline, an
abandoned elevated railroad track where he has found a dense wilderness
of untamed vegetation that mutates kaleidoscopically through the
seasons. As sensitive and nuanced as a nature poet, Sternfeld gives us
crystal-clear takes of verdant causeways piercing through rows of
buildings in spring and high summer; muted, hazy shots of sere autumn,
replete with burning apricot-colored grass and swarms of daisies; and
fluffy white winterscapes laced with tangles of branches and even an
evergreen tree festooned with Christmas lights. With determined
single-point perspective and medium format, Sternfeld puts us right
where he was, in an exuberant scrubland that nature has reclaimed for
its ceaseless play. Joel Sternfeld's "Walking the Highline" will be on display at
Schneider Gallery, 230 West Superior through October 26.
