Tip of the Week
Politically Incorrect/Flatfile

Michael Weinstein

From Fredrick Holland's enormous oil-drenched American flag to Chris Austin's 10x4 grid of color shots of posters hyping Britney Spears in the New York subway (replete with graffiti affixed by passengers), political and culturally critical art makes a comeback in this sharp-edged show. The most piercing and profound images are Carrie Notari's boldly colorful digital combinations of photographs of female nudes in flowing yoga positions and ravishing erotic poses that are embedded in shots of graffiti-laden walls. In a leap to a new and more intense level, Notari manages to subvert her New Age sensibility and present a vibrantly cutting critique of the female-goddess myth; scrawled over a voluptuous woman with her head lifted and her arms raised to heaven is the blunt rejoinder, "FUCK." (118 N. Peoria, (312)491-1190. Through August 31.
