TIP OF THE WEEK
Withinsight/James M. Hunt Gallery

Michael Weinstein

With this final show, Chicago loses one of its most important venues for young photographers. Adhering to a straight black-and-white aesthetic, Director Richard Stromberg has inspired hundreds of aspiring shooters to clarify and perfect their visions. In the grand finale, 19 photographers display 76 images that are uniformly marked by tight composition, sensitive attention to light, and strong subjects. Bekah Raleigh shot a construction site from a bridge, capturing workers pumping out sludge from a huge black hole; the outlines of the pit form the shape of a huge hulking monster sprouting hoses from its body. A gifted straight surrealist, Raleigh matches Magritte in her beautifully illuminated study of a railroad bridge that has been cut off in the middle and leads straight into a fluffy, cloudy sky. Through August 31.
