For most of us, it starts in our early twenties. We make a
decision--about a job, a mate, whatever--and we realize our choice has
consequences for the rest of our life. As life goes on, we can't help
but wonder from time to time, what if I had made another choice? Joe
Kita, a writer for Men's Health magazine, confronted the inevitable
surge of regrets and self-doubts brought by the onset of his fortieth
birthday by tackling them head-on. He set out to revisit his twenty
greatest personal regrets, and chronicled them in "Another Shot: How I
Relived my Life in Less than a Year." In a breezy memoir, at times
funny, at times melancholy, he tries out again for his high-school
basketball team, attempts to track down a missed chance at romance and
hires a butler--in order to confront his regret at "not being filthy
rich." Not surprising, his quest seems mostly to affirm the course he's
chosen. But the journey, and his thoughtful contemplation en route, stir
up universal questions in a playful manner.
Kita reads from "Another Shot" April 11 at Transitions Bookplace,
1000 West North, (312)951-7323.
