YOU RUCK!
Some basics of rugby

Dave Chamberlain

The Clash of Six Nations
Clash of Six Nations is the rather colorful name given to the major European rugby tournament. The Six Nations are England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy. England is the defending champion, though with one game left in the tournament, France is undefeated in 2002.

The Super 12
The Super 12 is Australia's premier rugby tournament, though teams from New Zealand and South Africa also take part. Teams each play eleven matches per season/tournament. The present defending champion club is ACT/Brumbie Wildcats.

A maul
A maul occurs in rugby when a ball carrier is stopped by the opposing team, but not tackled. On offense, the object is to push your teammate forward. On defense, the object is to push backwards. Maul occurs most often near the goal line, when a team is trying to push in for a try.

Celtic football
Celtic football is similar to rugby, but with some glaring exceptions. For example, forward passing is allowed, and a ball carrier can only run so far with the ball before he must either kick it away, to himself, or bounce it along the ground. In many ways, it is similar to Australian Rules Football. The ball is larger and less oblong as well.

CARFU
The Chicago Area Rugby Football Association is the governing body that oversees the area's thirty-eight teams in Divisions I, II and III, as well as college, high school and women's teams.

A "try"
Essentially, a touchdown.

A "ruck"
Similar to a scrum, where standing players attempt to gain possession of the ball using their feet.

RAW MATERIAL
Pinetop Seven, one of Chicago's most underrated bands, plays March 23 at the Abbey Pub. Go see them--their music is soft, very laid-back, extremely textured and highly personable. In fact, Pinetop Seven is so personable, a fan was recently able to see them outside the normal rock-show arena.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Here's a recommendation that assumes people interested in seeing this movie aren't expecting "Mulholland Drive." Dig vampires? Well this is next level shit. Dig comic books? Than you'll appreciate Guillermo del Toro's take on Marvel Comic's "Blade" series.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Unlike his Parisian contemporaries (Daft Punk, Air, Cassius), who would rather re-live seventies soft-jazz and prog, former Respect DJ Dimitri From Paris revels in the early sixties, kitsch-heavy lounge; for those interested, check out last year's "Sacrebleu."

TIP OF THE WEEK
With the current musical climate that makes rock stars out of DJs--and compilation/mix CDs more important than purely original music--the denominators of rock criticism fall to the way side. Instead, it's far more vital to critique a vibe presented by a DJ, and in those terms Miguel Migs stands tall.
