These white boys just can't get enough of the blues now, can they? The
Deadly Snakes hail from that hotbed of the blues, Toronto, and bring a
sound so muddied and junked up that you'd swear you were listening to
something on Fat Possum Records--something Delta and dirty. To date this
expansive band (six guys, including a trumpet player) has two
full-length records, last year's "I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore" (In
the Red) and their 1999 debut, "Love Undone" (Sympathy), each a
gargled piece of refined garbage--though the former features more
polished production. I'd be a fool to try and tell you the Deadly
Snakes
were good; at their best, they almost stand up to Asie Payton's knees.
But this is bloody raw garage blues, with shitty vocals and guitar
chords played so hard the strings mourn for mercy. For the garage rock
scholars out there, it's worth noting that Greg "Oblivion" Cartwright
plays in the Snakes; this accounts for the first record's ultra-shitty
sound, and the occasional Memphis drawl/rock'n'stomp on "Soldier."
The Deadly Snakes play March 1 at the Empty Bottle, 1035 North
Western, (773)276-3600.
